Interview: From Princess to Queen
Please tell our readers a little about yourself.
I am a born and bred Singaporean Chinese who is also a Clinical Sexologist and Relationship Coach practicing in Singapore and Malaysia. I have four degrees including a Doctorate in Human Sexuality and most recently a Masters in Counseling. I am passionate about helping people realize their full potential. Could you tell us a bit about your book and why it is a must-read?
I’ve often been asked what inspired me to pursue this career of being a Sexologist in an economically successful but predominantly conservative Asian country, Singapore. After seven years of running my practice, I thought celebrating surviving the 7th year itch with a third book. It is a must-read because it is a mix between my personal life and professional sex and relationship advice – and it is about heartbreaks, heartgasms, and everything in-between! It is my aim to help people (you specifically!).
What inspired you to write your book?
My desire to help and reach more people always fuels me to do more, and be more. I know I am limited by time and space, and a book has the potential to be shared and help more people than my private coaching and workshops could reach. A book could also continue to help people long after I am gone.
What was the most challenging aspect of writing your book?
Some parts of the book were pulled from content I had previously written. There were a few chapters that felt like I was bleeding my heart onto the keyboard. My fingers would just fly over the keyboard, and I would have to take breaks when it got emotionally too exhausting, especially the chapter on the two major breakups in my life.
Do you have any unique or quirky writing habits?
Perhaps it all started with my first book. I had the cover designed before the chapters and contents were finalized. Since then, I get my book cover designed and finalized before I start writing. The ability to visualize my book in the hands of readers, and on book shelves spurs me on to finishing it.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
The original title of this book was “I Survived the 7-Year Itch: Burnout, Bliss and Everything In-Between”. Yet when push came to shove, I wasn’t excited about a book with such a title. I needed a title that was much more reflective of who I was as a person – with a bit more heart. I wanted to take my readers on a journey and hence, the title.
Is there a message you want your readers to take away from your book?
Yes, that our sexuality is a journey which will evolve. And the more we accept and reconcile with our past and what made us who we are, the better able we are to move forth. Do you have any advice for the yet-to-be-published writers reading this?
Just give yourself the goal of writing 10 minutes at a time. I procrastinated for months before I could delay this book no longer – and finished most of it within one week; and the book in entirety within two weeks. Having crowdfunded for this book, I knew I just had to deliver (and intentionally did this to myself). I gave myself the goal of 10 minutes a day only to find myself being pulled into it and writing at a stretch of four hours at a time. I would simply keep going back it to until it was done. What are you working on now?
I’m sitting with the desire to birth my 4th and 5th book. After seven years of being in private practice focusing on sexuality and relationships only, I’m developing some corporate courses relating to communication, as well as diversity and inclusion. What is your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you (i.e., website, personal blog, Facebook page, etc.) and link(s)?

About the book
The book "From Princess to Queen: Heartbreaks, Heartgasms and Everything In-Between" is a bold yet vulnerable account of how Clinical Sexologist and relationship coach Dr. Martha Tara Lee views sex and sexuality. As the first sexologist with a doctorate in human sexuality in Singapore, Martha has gone where nobody has. She shares how she survived heartbreaks, attained heartgasms and everything in between this journey. This book documents her professional journey as a pioneer sexologist, as well as personal one of reclaiming her femininity, and truly stepping into her power as a woman. More than coming of age book, each chapter has a theme, followed by practical suggestions for readers on how you too can navigate your own lives.
