Drica Pinotti, a Brazilian-born author, has been taking the literary world by storm with her witty perception of the modern female. With fifteen books published in Brazil and Portugal she is, now, debuting in America with her first romantic comedy, a hilarious New York City fairytale titled ‘My Crazy (Sick) Love.’
Could you tell us a bit about your book and why it is a must-read?
Amanda Loeb is a single, intelligent New York City attorney coming up on the eve of her thirtieth birthday. With a stable job, circle of supportive friends, and close relationships with her mother and sister one detail sets Amanda apart from others – she is a hypochondriac. Her medicine cabinet is home to a stock of medications sourced from an actively managed A-Z list of the best doctors in NYC. When Amanda meets Brian Marshall, a handsome and charismatic restaurant owner, her heart beats in undiagnosable somersaults. As their relationship develops Amanda learns the intricacies and complications love brings may be the cure-all ‘pill’ she needs to free herself from the affliction - for the rest of her life.
What inspired you to write your book?
I'm always looking for inspiration everywhere. One day observing a friend and the panic that she has to get sick, I knew I had found a strong character.
Where is your favorite place to write? Do you have a special hangout or any writing rituals?
I love writing when I'm surrounded by books. So I always go to work in a coffee shops inside bookstores or in a library. My Crazy Sick Love was written almost completely at NY Public Library. This place is so beautiful that it is almost impossible don't feel inspired there.
What’s the most surprising thing you learned about yourself while writing your book?
How funny I am. None can tell it! My friends use to say... wow... I didn't know you are so funny!
What do you find are the most rewarding aspects of being an author?
When people recognized my talent. That is good feeling.
Who are some of the writers who have influenced you?
I am big fan of Chick lit books. I read chick lit all the time. My favorites are Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes, Jennifer Weiner, Melissa Hill, Jill Mansell, Emily Giffin, Meg Cabot and Lauren Weisberger.
On a more personal note: Tell us a little about your “real” (non-writing) life — family, job, hobbies, etc.
I am a professional author. I love hiking, travel and cooking.
Who is a creative person (not a writer) who has influenced you and your work?
Good question. I don't think I have. Normally everyone around says I am the creative one. Maybe my late father had this "artist" and outside the box mind. He was a songwriter for hobby and he wrote some good things.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors who may be reading this interview?
Try to be original. Look for details in your day-by-day and describe it in a unique way. Observe people closely, you never know when/where your best caracter will show up for you.
What’s next for you? What are you working on now?
I am currently work in my next book... My Crazy (Sick) Wedding, the book about Amanda's Wedding. She is so strong as a caracter and can not leave here behind. I am not ready to say goodbye.
What is your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you (i.e., website, personal blog, Facebook page, etc.) and link(s)?
Social Media is the thing now, for sure. I love having fans around on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook (all of them... dricapinotti). Everybody is welcome! :)
